USS Jacksonville (SN-699)
On January 10, 2013, USS
Jacksonville, a nuclear-powered submarine, was damaged
in the Persian Gulf when one of its two periscopes was struck by an unidentified vessel.
The other periscope on the submarine revealed that the first one had been “sheared off".
No one was hurt in the early morning incident and the submarine's nuclear reactor did not
suffer any damage. It appears the ‘fishing trawler’ that collided with the 7,000-tonne
submarine was not only undamaged, but barely noticed the accident.
