USS Benfold (DDG-65)
On November 18, 2017, Japanese tugboat “drifted into” USS Benford after losing propulsion
during a scheduled towing exercise in Sagami Wan, causing “minimal damage” to the warship and no
reported injuries. The Benford, a guided-missile destroyer, appears to have sustained scrapes
on its side and remains at sea under her own power. The Japanese commercial tug is being towed by
another vessel to a port in Yokosuka.
